What does food taste like to dogs?

I can't say precisely what food tastes like to dogs, but I will say there are some foods that it seems no dog will turn down and that they go freaky for it, such as bacon or freeze dried liver. Our dogs used to eat dog food, a good blend, and they just inhaled it, but not with a gusto. We changed them to a home cooked diet where they get fresh foods and a wide variety of meats, veggies and starch as well as supplements and they eat and seem to savor their food. Also, when they know it is time to start cooking, they come sit in front of us and stare, whine, like: "Hey, time for our food..we can't wait". They just LOVE their food now. There is clearly a big difference between eating the same food day in and day out- in the form of kibble, and eating fresh cooked foods. We do this because it is easy enough for us. I know this is not convenient for many people.
